The National Council for Voluntary Organisations commissioned some distinguished authors to speculate on what they believe some of the anticipated developments in the public policy environment might mean for voluntary and community organisations. The book includes essays on civil society and civil renewal, the future of local governance, the links between voluntary and community organisations, social enterprise and cooperatives, and financing the voluntary and community sector. Some of the themes running throughout the essays include: questions regarding the development of a voluntary sector ethos; the balance between the rights of individuals and those of communities; how the voluntary and community sector can go about strengthening its governance structures without loosing the unique characteristics of what it means to be a voluntary organisation; and questions regarding the missions and objectives of voluntary and community sector organisations.
